Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz, Pädagogische Hochschule, Zentrum Lesen, Switzerland (Switzerland)
The Fachhoschule Nordwestschweiz, Pädagogische Hochschule, Zentrum LESEN (University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, School for Teacher Education, Literacy Centre) at the Fachhochschule Aargau Nordwestschweiz (university of applied sciences, teacher education) conducts research into reading literacy and general processes in first and second language acquisition, especially in the context of the new media.
Its aim is also to transfer research findings to the classroom situation. The centre’s team consists of researchers, teachers and ICT specialists. The Literacy Centre was established in 2002. Its current activities are manifold: One example of transfer is a project in which the Centre is advising a school adminstration area on measures for improving reading. The Centre keeps close ties with classrooms and once a year organises authors’ readings for interested schools. In one research project the effectiveness of different approaches to teaching in the field of reading and writing is established. Another is focussed on the readability of children’s books. Furthermore the Centre is involved in builiding up a network for the prevention of illiteracy.
