Evaluation of “Magazines for Schools”

Project evaluation 2009/2010

“Zeitschriften in die Schulen“ (Magazines for Schools) is a project targeting media education and reading promotion. Its basic idea is to offer students an entertaining selection of magazines addressing a broad scope of interests, thus motivating them to read and kindling a joy of reading even in young people who are otherwise less engaged in reading. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Stiftung Lesen assesses the effectiveness of the project, which focuses on the so-called PISA group of students at risk, i.e. poor and extremely poor readers

What are the objectives?

The project will focus on
- researching changes in media use and reading behaviour;
- analysing differences in the reading motivation and the reading behaviour of boys and girls,  as well as students with and without a migrant background;
- gaining insights serving a targeted optimisation and new development of reading promotion measures and actions serving to increase the joy of reading.

Procedure:

Students from 20 classes participating in the project attending the less academic secondary school types (Hauptschule, Gesamtschulen) will be interviewed as to:
- their own media conduct and reading motivation;
- the way the magazine project is dealt with in the group, and respective communication;
- the influence of peers on attitudes and motivation regarding media use;
- patterns of interpretation, values and world views regarding the general meaning of media and the role of reading in particular.

Results will probably be published in autumn 2010!
