Our Child
A manual for parents answering important questions of education and care
In order to inform particularly parents with migrant backgrounds on aspects of the education and care of their children, the social ministry for the federal state of Hesse and Stiftung Lesung have published to manuals, “Unser Kind“ (Our Child), for age groups 0 – 3 years and 3 – 6 years respectively. The manual contains tips and advice how parents can actively support the development of their child right from the start, and promote the child’s skills in the family’s daily life, allowing the child to grow into a self-confident, strong and sociable person.
The individual chapters of the manual provide information on important child-related topics such as training the child to sleep, healthy diet, media consumption and of course, age-adapted methods of language and reading promotion. At the same time, the brochure provides impetus to children from different countries of origin living together, underscoring the significance of learning German at an early stage and explaining the German education system to the parents, for instance addressing kindergarten entry. The topics of integration, multilingualism as well as early language and reading promotion play a central role. Furthermore, the manual provides the parents with manifold suggestions for engaging with their children.
The brochure is available in the language versions of German/Turkish, German/Russian, German/Arabic, and German/English.
