Reading Aloud at Kindergarten
The Buchklub der Jugend launched the campaign Reading Aloud at Kindergarten (Vorlesekindergarten) together with ZeitPunktLesen – Leseland NÖ and the provincial government of Lower Austria in 2007. Kindergartens in Lower Austria were encouraged to start their own reading-aloud programmes and to inspire pre-school children with a love of reading. The nursery school teachers attended workshops and were provided with literature on reading aloud by the Buchklub.
The aim of the Reading Aloud at Kindergarten initiative was to find to suitable means to help pre-school children develop important language skills. Scientific surveys show that children who approach reading with pleasure will be more successful in reading and learning throughout their lives. Reading aloud and telling tales at home and being introduced to books in kindergarten create a positive social climate that will make children curious about reading and interested in books.
41 kindergartens joined the initiative and implemented 43 reading-aloud projects over the course of a year. Thus, 1,661 children took part in this initiative for reading promotion. The evaluation of the initiative now shows that the children’s reading motivation increased from 29 to 95 percent.
