The Reading Bug promotion is a firm favourite among 11- and 12-year-olds. Two rucksacks are filled with books – fiction and non-fiction, books for advanced readers as well as books for children with reading difficulties. The teacher decides which book in each rucksack is ‘infected’, and the two children who catch the ‘bug’ get to decide in which school the books are to be read next and to take the rucksacks there – even if this involves a train or bus journey to the other end of Switzerland! The Reading Bug promotion’s particular aim is to improve reading skills and to motivate children to read.
