The reading promotional and media educational project is targeted country-wide at the classes 5 to 12. The initiative counts as one of the most important reading promotion projects in Germany. In the magazine month of April 2012 more than 450,000 pupils from ca. 4,500 schools with more than 17,000 classes participated in the project. A flanking study with the focus on schools in sectors with a lack of education, with the title of “Magazines and Diversity” underlines the great reading promotion potential of this particular media form which especially often reaches boys with little reading affinity and to a particularly major extent children and young people from parental homes with a lack of education and with a migration background.
More than 30 titles covering a wide range encourage browsing and reading. The free magazine packages provide reading material for the whole month and a variety of connecting factors for actions in lessons. Teachers receive extra material with ideas for lessons extending beyond teaching subjects and the impulse film “Unbelievable reading pleasure – the magazines in schools project”.
“Magazines in schools” has a positive effect on the reading image and prepares the ground for lasting changes in reading motivation and in reading conduct – and thus ensures better educational chances. As a result of the recommendations by the Ministry of Culture, the project is anchored in the teaching agendas of several German states.
The project was developed in 2002 with the PISA Study as background. The success of the project under the patronage of Bernd Neumann, representative of the Federal Ministry for Culture and Media, is thanks to the partnership between Stiftung Lesen, Stiftung Presse-Grosso, the Association of German magazine publishers and the Presse-Grosso Federal Association with the ca. 70 Grosso companies.
